How My Spiritual Awakening Began After a Life-Changing Medical Crisis

10 March 2026

Some spiritual awakenings begin with meditation retreats or years of spiritual study. Mine began after emergency open-heart surgery. One moment I was living a relatively ordinary life. The next, I was being rushed into surgery after experiencing a spontaneous aortic dissection, a life-threatening tear in the body’s main artery.

That open-heart surgery saved my life. But what followed changed it.

In the months after that experience, something inside me began to shift in ways I couldn’t yet explain. My perception of life felt different. And slowly, I began noticing signs that I was moving through what many people call a spiritual awakening.

At the time, I didn’t intimately understand that phrase. I simply knew something inside me had opened.

The Quiet Beginning of an Awakening

After the surgery and long recovery period, life slowed down dramatically. My body needed time to heal. I spent four weeks in recovery at a rehabilitation facility, often walking quietly through nature trails or sitting with my thoughts in a way I never had before. When life suddenly pauses like that, something interesting can happen.

You begin to listen more closely.

You notice things you once rushed past.

And slowly, your relationship with life begins to change. For me, the transformation didn’t arrive as a dramatic revelation. It unfolded gradually through subtle experiences that, over time, formed a pattern. Looking back, I now recognize them as some of the first signs of spiritual awakening.

Signs That My Spiritual Awakening Had Begun

Everyone’s awakening journey is different. But there are certain experiences many people share as their awareness begins to shift.

These were some of the signs I began to notice.

1. A Deep Shift in Perspective

After surviving a life-threatening event, it’s almost impossible to see the world in the same way. Things that once felt urgent suddenly seemed less important. Other things—like presence, connection, and meaning—began to matter more deeply. Many people who experience a spiritual awakening describe a similar shift. Life becomes less about rushing forward and more about understanding what truly matters.

2. Heightened Awareness of Synchronicities

One of the most surprising changes was how often meaningful coincidences began appearing in my life. During walks through the woods near the rehabilitation center, I started noticing small symbolic moments that felt deeply personal—things like a white feather appearing after asking the universe for a sign, or finding a copper coin shortly afterward.

Individually, each moment could be dismissed as coincidence. But together, they began to feel like quiet nudges reminding me that life might hold layers of meaning we don’t always see at first.

These kinds of experiences are often described as synchronicities, a term originally explored by psychologist Carl Jung to describe meaningful coincidences that seem to carry personal significance.

3. A Growing Sensitivity to Energy

As time passed, I also became more aware of subtle sensations in my body. One experience in particular stands out. While visiting the Basilica of St. Anthony in Padua, I approached the saint’s tomb along with other visitors. As I moved closer, a strong tingling and buzzing sensation spread through my hands and arms—similar to the feeling of energy that many Reiki practitioners recognize.

The sensation faded as I walked away.

Moments like this left a deep impression on me. They opened the possibility that we may be far more sensitive to energy than we realize.

4. An Increasing Trust in Intuition

Another change was learning to listen to something many of us ignore: our inner knowing. Intuition often speaks quietly. It may feel like a gentle nudge, a moment of hesitation, or a sense that something simply feels right or wrong. During my recovery, I began paying closer attention to these signals. Over time, that inner voice grew stronger and clearer. Many people on a spiritual awakening path describe the same experience—an unfolding ability to trust the guidance that comes from within.

5. A Stronger Connection to Nature

Nature became an important companion during my recovery. Long walks through forests and quiet observation of the natural world created space for reflection and healing. I began noticing small details—floating leaves, shifting light, birdsong—that previously would have passed unnoticed.

Nature has a remarkable way of grounding us, and for many people experiencing spiritual growth, it becomes an important source of clarity and peace.

When You Don’t Yet Have Words for What’s Happening

One of the most confusing aspects of spiritual awakening is that it often begins before we have language for it. You might simply feel that something inside you is changing. Your perspective shifts. Your awareness expands. Certain experiences begin to stand out in ways they didn’t before.

At first, this can feel strange or even unsettling. But over time, many people come to realize that awakening is not something that happens overnight. It is a gradual unfolding of awareness—a journey of rediscovering deeper parts of ourselves.

Your Awakening Journey

If you’re reading this because you’ve begun noticing similar changes in your own life, know that you’re not alone. Many people quietly move through these experiences, unsure of what they mean or where they might lead.

A spiritual awakening isn’t about having all the answers.

It’s about becoming curious.

It’s about listening more closely to the inner signals, synchronicities, and moments of awareness that gently guide us toward a deeper understanding of ourselves.

For me, this unfolding journey eventually inspired the creation of the Awakened Journey Journal and Awakened Journey Oracle Cards, tools designed to help you explore your own path through reflection, intuition, and gentle self-discovery.

And if you feel called to walk this path alongside others, you’re warmly invited to join the Awakened Journey Collective—a supportive space where members share experiences, practice grounding and meditation, and explore the signs and synchronicities that often appear along the awakening journey.

Because awakening is not something we have to navigate alone.

It’s a journey of remembering who you truly are—and sometimes that journey becomes even more meaningful when it’s shared.
